32722 description

The IWC-manufactured calibre 32722 is an automatic movement developed for the Pilot’s Venturer Vertical Drive and built around the watch’s dual-time display and crownless operating system. Beating at 28,800 vibrations per hour, it offers a power reserve of 120 hours and incorporates an integrated GMT module, allowing the watch to display the mission reference time centrally while also indicating it in 24-hour format via an additional hand on the outer dial scale. The hour hand can be adjusted independently in one-hour increments, so the movement can show a second time zone without disturbing the underlying reference time.

What distinguishes calibre 32722 is the way it is integrated into the Vertical Drive concept. Instead of relying on a conventional crown, the movement is operated through a patent-pending rotating bezel system whose motion is transmitted to the winding stem via an efficient clutch mechanism. A rocker switch on the side of the case allows the wearer to select different functions, including winding the movement and setting the two different time indications. This architecture was developed specifically for use in space and for operation while wearing gloves, and it also enables hybrid winding, both through the automatic system and by rotating the bezel anti-clockwise.

In practical terms, calibre 32722 combines long autonomy, a traveller-style dual-time function, central hacking seconds, and a date display at 3 o’clock with an operating concept tailored to human spaceflight. Within the context of IWC’s current movement range, it is notable less for decorative emphasis than for the way its technical layout supports the watch’s intended use case, namely reliable operation in microgravity and zero-gravity conditions as well as intuitive handling in mission environments.
